‘One Yarn Of Plastic’ by Dutch designers Studio Plott is a self initiated research project that explores the idea of digitally printed geometric patterns and surfaces. The young designers have developed a computer-controlled machine which is able to print their own custom designs by extruding a molten plastic filament. Textile bindings form the basis of these printed surfaces, which are a contemporary representation of weaving, knitting and embroidery.

The surfaces grow slowly with each line that is printed, with designers making use of their own small in-house production which allows them to easily adapt each surface by shape, colour and form. The end result is a series of flexible, strong and lightweight sheets that are intended for wall coverings, room–divider screens, curtains and “table graphics”.

Studio plott was founded as a collaboration between Rudi Boiten & Mireille Burger after they both graduated from Design Academy Eindhoven in 2014. Both fascinated by the qualities of materials, they like to express themselves with their graphic language in material based surfaces and products.

Rudi is an observer – he creates techniques that are both technical and tactile. His creative fantasies are a way to come up with simple yet smart solutions. Mireille’s intuitive way of working drives her to explore a process whereby colour, material and detail matter. Getting inspiration from cultures, crafts and nature, she creates new insights by mixing these together.
