There’s a certain kind of confidence in building an entire product line around one motif. Format, a new rug label designed in Singapore and hand-knotted by master artisans in Nepal, has done exactly that with In The Beginning There Was An Egg, its inaugural 2026 collection. The premise is simple: an egg carries biological and philosophical weight—origin, potential, the shape before a shape declares itself—and Format treats it as raw material rather than illustration. Perriand, bisected clean down the middle in red and black, nods unmistakably to the modernist palette of its namesake, Charlotte Perriand. Ronchamp and La Tourette borrow both their names and their arched, colour-blocked geometry from Le Corbusier’s chapel and monastery, translated into wool as scattered confetti-bright rectangles and stacked, zigzagging arcs. Eggclipse traces a ring of lunar phases across an olive ground, while Free Range, in a quieter register, lines up a grid of speckled ovals like a carton fresh from the coop. Each one behaves more like a sculptural object than a floor covering, and it makes good on Format’s stated belief that a rug isn’t a backdrop for a room but the thing everything else arranges itself around.Every piece is made to order, hand-knotted or hand-tufted from Himalayan sheep’s wool (with silk accents on the more graphic designs) or New Zealand wool, and available in custom sizing. Format is steering clear of large production runs, choosing instead a slower model built around individual artisans in Nepal—one that trades volume for the kind of quiet irregularity only handwork can produce, and that no factory line ever quite manages to fake. It’s a confident opening statement from a label betting that craftsmanship, not speed, is the more interesting story—and, so far, an egg is proving a surprisingly rich place to start telling it.Fractal Geometry Echoes the Rhythm of Weaving in This Gallery-like Jaipur Rug Store.Roar's design for Jaipur Rugs takes its cue from the rug itself. The studio built a spatial system around fractal geometry, echoing the steady repetition of weaving.
