Inspired by children’s naïve line drawings, the Corner Collection is a seating collection with architectural forms reminiscent of gable-roofed houses.

Another Bureau of Design introduced the Corner Stool for the first time during the Melbourne Design Week 2020 at Alt Material’s Ductility exhibition (short-lived due to the O.G. Covid outbreak in Australia).

“The Collection has evolved since the Corner Stool was first presented,” says Abdé Nouamani, designer and founder of Melbourne-based Another Bureau of Design, working across furniture, lighting and object design. “It’s relaunch reflects an intuitive expansion of the original ideas, with the addition of new materials and finishes.’’

Nouamani collaborated with Melbourne-based photographer Annika Kafcaloudis to shoot the Corner Collection on a day that couldn’t have been more Melbourne-like weather wise—sun, rain, wind, repeat.

“The concept behind the shoot was to document the journey from a workshop to a photo studio, in this case, taking the collection from my workshop in Preston to Gale Street Studios in Brunswick East,” says Abdé. “The multiple trips from A to B gave us the opportunity to shoot the pieces being loaded and unloaded in a series of different environments.”

The metal panels of each piece are cut, folded and carefully welded together to create the forms. Each surface is then finished by hand and sealed either with a wax or lacquer. The nature of the finishing method—as well as the selection of the timber planks for the wood version—makes each seat entirely individual. Each one is a signed and numbered edition.

First introduced in aluminium, Corner Collection is now also available in steel and wood. Different metals, finishes and timber species are also available upon request.

The pieces are pictured in brushed aluminium, raw steel, blackened steel and dark wood. Each design is made to order with standard lead times of 6-8 weeks. The studio encourages designers to get in touch about producing site-specific pieces. The collection is extremely versatile and can be customised to suit various environments. Customisation in form, materials and finish are welcome.
