Australians are touched by the work of designers every single day—the homes we wake up in, the clothes we wear, the products, systems and cities we move through without a second thought. And yet, on paper, the profession barely exists. Design pumps an estimated $67.5 billion into the Australian economy every year, but nobody can tell you how many designers there actually are. We’ve spent decades arguing for the value of this profession without the most basic receipt. This year, we finally get one. For the first time, the 2026 Census will count design as its own dedicated occupational group—242 Design Professionals—under the ABS’s new OSCA framework. In plain terms, this is the first real chance to capture the true size of Australia’s design workforce. And it only comes around once every five years.Which is exactly why the Design Institute of Australia has launched Write DESIGNER ahead of Census Night on Tuesday 11 August. At its heart is a sixty-second film by Clemenger BBDO, with spoken word by ARIA Award-winner N’fa Jones and a score by Jonah Gabriel. Over a refrain of “you can’t”—can’t hear, can’t see, can’t breathe—the film answers with work by Marc Newson, Romance Was Born, Ludo Studio (yes, the team behind Bluey), RØDE, Balarinji, Carr and many others. Designers prove you can. It’s a stirring piece of work, and the message could not be more timely.“Write DESIGNER is more than a campaign, it’s a collective act of advocacy for Australia’s design profession,” says DIA CEO Simone LeAmon. So why is Yellowtrace behind this? Because championing designers is the whole reason we exist, and it has been that way since 2010. I’ve built my entire life on the conviction that design profoundly shapes how we see the world, and that the people who make it deserve to be seen and valued. As I said at our Sightline events this year: “Better designers make a better world.” And a better world for designers leads to a better world for all of us. But you can’t fund, teach or fight for a profession that’s invisible. Visibility is where value starts. So, on Census Night, when the form asks your occupation, don’t write “manager” or whatever your payroll system spat out. Write your actual design profession—Interior Designer, Industrial Designer, Graphic Designer, whichever is yours—and begin your tasks with “Designing…”. Thirty seconds of your evening, for the clearest picture of Australian design we’ve ever had.Be visible. Be counted. Write DESIGNER. The Write DESIGNER campaign is live now at design.org.au/write-designer, with practical guidance and a full list of recognised design occupations.Education, Advocacy and Community-building: The Role & Impact of the Design Institute of Australia. To gain deeper insights into Design Institute of Australia's role, impact, and the pressing challenges facing the design community, we sat down with some of our favourite people in the biz.
