Techtile #3 by Japanese multidisciplinary design studio NOSIGNER is a temporary exhibition that took place in 2010, which saw the designers wrap the entire gallery space in imprinted aluminium foil. The space was ‘spontaneously formed’ by volunteers, as NOSIGNER believe design is too reliant on ‘editing’, and that far more interesting solutions come out of impulsive and collaborative activities.

Exploring these ideas, they mustered more than 20 people aged between 10 – 40, and sent them out into the city of Tokyo to collect over two hundred different ‘textures’, by imprinting them in aluminium foil. These imprinted foil sheets comprise the exhibition space, creating an enormously tactile and layered experience for observers. Textures usually hidden from the eye became visible through the use of the aluminium, a spontaneous outcome designed by the collective efforts of participants, rather than the edited finesse of just one individual. Pure genius on so many levels!
