Sam Baron and Calico Wallpaper Launch Noir Collection.

Calico Wallpaper unveils their latest collaboration, Noir, created with French designer Sam Baron. This new collection of wallcoverings explores the tactile qualities of paper, paint, and brush.

Characterized by broad, sweeping brush strokes, Noir brings focus to the essential materials and techniques that compose the artwork—showcasing details of the texture, hand gesture, scale, and composition. The concept is an homage to the work of French artist Pierre Soulages and his signature “Outrenoir” paintings, monochromatic works that study the reflection of light on the surface.

“We’ve long admired Sam Baron’s unique ability to investigate traditional design concepts and materials, then reinterpret them in an entirely new, contemporary way,” remarks co-founder and creative director Rachel Cope. “We first collaborated with Sam on a small piece for a Salone del Mobile exhibition in 2015. Years later, we’re excited to present a collection that celebrates the beauty and depth in simplicity.”

“I remember when Calico Wallpaper started to wake up the classic and decorative wallpaper market with an amazing marble wallcovering featuring gold accents. Since then, we have been following each other’s paths and have met in Milan regularly. Our mutual admiration matured and gave birth to this Noir collection,” adds Baron.

As with all Calico Wallpaper collections, Noir was born from original, handmade artwork. Baron created artwork tests and sent them to Cope, who then painted the full mural. The pair remained in close collaboration throughout the creative process.
