Why hello there theatrical geometric forms. This university located in the Moroccan desert was designed by Saad El Kabbaj, Driss Kettani and Mohamed Amine Siana. It’s a fine example of the basic principles of design; proportion, repetition, scale and positive and negative space. These geometric forms paired with the crisp shadows from the desert sun present one majestic architectural experience.

Let’s not reduce this to a formal exercise though. The facade articulation and site planning are highly site responsive and give consideration to how students move between buildings. By employing deep eaves, louvres and covered outdoor spaces, the scheme offers reprieve from the hot desert sun.

Photographed by Fernando Guerra, I love how the use of passing figures exaggerates the intensity of colour, gives context and scale and hints at the ritual of passing through this space.

Truly a fine moment in desert architecture, wouldn’t you say?
