Golden have restored a sense of luxurious calm to The Esplanade, a late twentieth-century property with panoramic views of Melbourne’s Port Phillip Bay. A considered palette of colours and textures draws from the idyllic bayside location, creating an effortless sequence throughout the four bedroom, five bathroom home.

Visitors enter into a grand foyer flooded with natural light. Reminiscent of a spiralling nautilus shell, the original staircase rises across all three levels, transformed to being light and contemporary from its previously heavy, ornate style. Textured concrete walls accentuate its curving form, and contrast stark white railings that frame an innovative vertical balustrade – a unifying element of the home, encouraging the residents to quite literally stop and enjoy the view.

Fine metal detailing offsets the rich patina of organic surfaces such as natural stone and warm timber. Robust stretches of grey marble throughout the living rooms, kitchen, and bathrooms add both grandeur and thoughtful durability.

Combatting the expansive size of The Esplanade, Golden creates intimacy by placing emphasis on the transition of spaces throughout, using tonal contrasts to delineate various zones conducive to distinct moods and moments. In one living space, dark timber battens conceal a television so as to preserve the uninterrupted vista. A second lounge features blonde timber and skylights, an airy alternative that highlights the bay views. Continuous tiled floors create synergy between the outdoor terrace and main indoor living spaces.

High-end over-scaled furniture grounds the lofty ceilings, encouraging warm, familial comfort. The living space includes a large Living Divani sofa, and a custom rug by Halycon Lake provides scale for the four-metre-long bespoke dining table by Lowe. Diffused pedant lights by Flos highlight textured linens, creating a softness that tempers the vast space. The Esplanade is an overall exercise in understated luxury.
