Different Thoughts timber door credenza and Our Edges Rug.

For Australian designer Elliat Rich, the design process is a creative translation between materials and culture, alive to a broader context of power and social value, always calling on the possibilities of the imagination. Based in Alice Springs, Elliat works across a broad spectrum of design including art and furniture, product development, exhibition design and limited edition objects.

In 2017, Elliat won the Australian Furniture Design Award with her vanity called ‘Place’ – the first major work where she allowed intuition to run in parallel with conceptual thinking. “Understanding and valuing the creative leaps that can’t be articulated through words or aren’t given space in a rational process,” she says of her approach to the winning piece.

This fortuitous win has now led to the opportunity to design a furniture collection for Stylecraft, dubbed ‘Different Thoughts’, comprising a credenza, floor light and rug.

‘Different Thoughts’ is an inquiry into boundaries of time and matter, and what connects one being to another. Conceived in an alchemy of functionality and narrative, and delivered with generosity and wonder, the collection invites us to be curious, break the rules, and to think critically about our relationships.

Different Thoughts Credenza is an elegant integration of lightness and utility, contrast and harmony, celebrating movement in all forms. Its seamless body with a woodgrain frame creates a smooth visual that allows the shifting doors to become the focal point. A sense of movement is captured in two door-set variations. The frosted acrylic version features a clear backing board allowing light to fill the unit, while the altering timber grain alternative captures of sense of dynamism. Internally, the shelving appears to be floating, while provisions for power and AV make the unit suitable for all home entertainment needs. Timber stain finishes include Black, Oak, Stone and Ecru, with the acrylic version available in violet and cyan, or white and stone.

Different Thoughts Collection’s Our Edges Rug is defined by elemental shapes and colours. A sense of continuity resulting from intersecting junctions of texture and pattern moves throughout the design. Complementary to the overall collection theme, the rug offers a sense of movement and freedom, completed by the fringing on both ends. Crafted in India from natural fibres including New Zealand Wool and Art-Silk highlights, the hand-tufted rugs are available in three colourways – Soft, Mist and Liquid.

Sculptural and graceful, the texturised glass profile of the Different Thoughts Floor Light is draped atop the tubular steel frame. The result is a profile that refracts and creates a flowing ring of light, which fades into the centre. Elliat intended the design to raise gentle questioning about what we place at the centre, and what we allow to remain there.

Different Thoughts credenza & Our Edges rugs are available now from Stylecraft, with The Different Thoughts floor light available from Spring 2020. For more information visit the Stylecraft website.
