An icon in handmade homewares and jewellery since 1985, Dinosaur Designs distinctive resin pieces need no introduction. Their globally recognised tableware, homewares and jewellery have been revered and much copied for decades. Alas, there’s only one OG DD!

Despite being so well known, co-founders and creative directors Louise Olsen and Stephen Ormandy find that many are still surprised by the true artisanal nature of their creations.

The Australian brand now unveils Handmade, a captivating short film directed by Tim Georgeson that offers an intimate look into the inner workings of their Sydney studio. The film delves into the meticulous processes and secret recipes developed over decades, capturing the unique visual language that defines Dinosaur Designs.

Handmade takes viewers through the journey of each piece, beginning with the ideation stage where Louise and Stephen share ideas and sketches. Prototypes are sculpted by hand from clay, followed by the intricate process of hand-pouring resin mixed with jewel-like pigments. Each object is then hand-sanded and finished by the skilled hands that craft every unique piece. This approach ensures that no two objects are identical, celebrating both perfection and the beauty of imperfection.

Louise Olsen emphasises that this hands-on methodology allows Dinosaur Designs to produce objects of exceptional quality. “We love the fact we make our pieces here in Sydney. There is so much opportunity for discovery in the making of each piece. Our techniques and recipes still continue to develop with every decade. Next year will be a milestone for us as we celebrate 40 years of Dinosaur Designs. Our creativity is still informed by our love of art, with curiosity and imagination at its core.”

Directed by Tim Georgeson and featuring music by Gary Sinclair, “Handmade” combines elements of art, documentary filmmaking, and soundscapes to reveal the soulful process behind Dinosaur Designs’ creations. Georgeson reflects, “I loved the experience of creating a film and sound work that takes us deep into the heart and process of Dinosaur Designs. This film reveals the poetry and soul that goes into making these one-of-a-kind resin objects.”
