Located in Fitzroy, a trendy suburb of Melbourne, Australia, this colourful and layered 120-square-metre space is where David Flack — founder and director of Flack Studio — works with his team in a relaxed atmosphere created to awaken creativity.

“In our designs, we are bold and elegantly masculine”, Flack says. “We tip our hats to restrained stateliness and offset it with unexpected, light-hearted elements. Holding craftsmanship in high regard, we combine warm materials with clean lines, textural palettes and fine detailing. The end result is considered and welcoming spaces.”

In just a few years, Flack Studio — established in 2014 — became among the country’s most sought after interior architecture and design practices with projects in Australia and abroad.

Focusing on materiality, the team’s design approach translates into a “wholly contemporary yet respectfully classic aesthetic, inspired by the architecture and design of bygone eras, a thirst for travel and adventure, and the delight of discovering unusual and beautiful things”, according to Flack.

On the exterior brick wall of Flack Studio HQ, a colourful piece emblazoned with the word “Always” — referring to the fact that Australia will always be an aboriginal land — by Indigenous Australian Reko Rennie (from Station Gallery) sets the tone for the surprises waiting to be discovered inside.

Artworks by Jahnne Pasco-White (from Station Gallery), Kate Tucker (from Daine Singer), Sam Martin (from Station Gallery), Karen Black and Darren Sylvester (both from Sullivan+Strumpf) adorn the interior spaces, where there is a mix of materials — from plaster to marble and terrazzo from Fibonacci Stone.

It took two years to create the perfect space, which is and will be, according to Flack, in constant evolution. “We really wanted to infuse our collaborators within the project and give the feeling that you are in a living space”, the designer says.

Several custom-designed furniture pieces by Flack Studio — including a mirror, credenza, table, rug and desk — combine with vintage and contemporary pieces such as the Mart Stam S33 chair, the Flos Luminator floor lamp and the Kvadrat Coda 2 – 0442 curtain, among others. For Flack, “it’s home” — to such an extent that his two dogs, Frank and Albert, almost seem to be part of the team.

“The process of designing an environment is a journey”, Flack says. “We help transform our clients’ vision into experiences. … Delivering an impeccably detailed, finely crafted and functional product is a given, but paramount to our execution is the importance of having fun.”

Flack already has new ideas in mind on how his studio, which he sees as a community centre, could evolve in the next few months. Among them are sometimes opening their doors to anyone interested in knowing more about design and organizing events.
