Witty Illustrations by Young Melbourne Artist Celeste Mountjoy, aka Filthyratbag.

16-year-old Melbourne-based artist Celeste Mountjoy, aka Filthyratbag, is a seriously funny human being that’s wise beyond her years. Her satirical drawings tackle global issues spanning world politics, feminism, race and racism, social media, sprinkled with a healthy dose of witty commentary laced with dark humour.

Mountjoy pays homage to fellow Australian illustrator Michael Leunig, who she states as the first artist to influence her work, as well as David Shrigley and Polly Nor. The young artist believes almost every conversation and situation can be broken down, pulled apart and then diluted into a concentrated essence of someone’s brain or character. Her work is centred around calling out the shitty parts of humans and human nature while making fun of them.

Mountjoy admits most of the characters in her comics are based off people she’s encountered and then amplified to be over the top and to the point. “People are weird and dark and hilarious all the time without even trying to be – you just need to look at things a little different to recognise that,” explains Mountjoy. Enough said.
