Some collections arrive with fanfare; Linea arrives the way good craft always does — quietly, and with something to say. That’s the animating idea behind Linea, the latest collection from Armadillo, the female-founded, ethical, Australian-born global rug brand that has been a long-time partner and friend of Yellowtrace. If you’re not already familiar with their work, consider this your introduction.

Launched last month, Linea represents a considered evolution in Armadillo’s design language—one that approaches traditional rug motifs with sensitivity and restraint rather than spectacle. Persian-inspired patterns begin as mapped drawings, are translated to loom, then interpreted again by the weaver. With each repetition, edges soften, proportions shift and colour settles. The result are designs that feel layered, lived with and inherently nuanced. Pattern is present, but moderated—emerging through touch, material and process rather than overt decoration.

The collection spans six distinct rugs, each with its own character but united by this philosophy of quiet craftsmanship. Allegra brings warmth through Afghan wool and Persian hand-knotting, its border and medallion motifs softened to a relaxed, lived-in ease. Adagio goes further still—an oxidised surface gently tightens the fibres, lending a timeworn quality that reads almost like an heirloom without any of the formality. Basilica in Clove revisits the classic medallion through earthy, green-inflected tones, achieving chromatic depth through intricate clipping. Minuet, by contrast, lets surface do the talking—linear clipping creates a gentle ripple across the cut-pile, calm and immersive in its serene Skylark hue.

Two pieces push the collection in slightly different directions. Sonata, woven from hand-spun Afghan wool, allows motifs to fade in and out of contrast—almost atmospheric in its effect. And then there’s Latitude, a departure for Armadillo: a fine flat-weave crafted entirely from linen, architectural in its restraint, available in colourways from the cool Beluga to the richer warmth of Caramel, Roan and Pine.

Rounding out the release is a thoughtful expansion of the perennial Odessa, with new colourways—Banksia, Partridge and Travertine joining the existing range — and custom sizing now available in Zinc and Kohl.

As the first Australian and American rug maker to achieve B Corp status, Armadillo continues to prove that beautiful design and ethical practice aren’t mutually exclusive. Linea is very much a collection for the long haul—pieces designed not to trend, but to endure.
