Restaurant NamNam is a Singaporean eatery in central Copenhagen. Designed by young danish studio HolmbäckNordentoft in collaboration with Christina Meyer Bengtsson, the restaurant opened it’s doors in late May 2012. Denmark’s”gastronomic entrepreneur” Claus Meyer and his good friends, the Danish-Singaporean couple Michael and Tin Pang-Larsen are the owners behind this venture. Now, if this all sounds terribly familiar, it’s because you might remember my previous post on Restaurant Radio in Copenhagen, designed by the same team and also owned by Claus Meyer. If this is the case – gold star to you for paying attention. I’m impressed!

I really love the way the designers have managed to create a curious fusion of Singapore kopitiam style with Scandinavian design aesthetic. The interior has a decidedly Asian flavour with candy-coloured furniture, bold graphics, paper lanterns and found objects on display. At the same the grey shades of timber, careful additions of black and off-white, attention to joinery detailing are all very much Scandinavian.

The restaurant’s laminate tables were handcrafted by Ulrik Nordentoft, while the chairs were made in colaboration with his design partner Sebastian Holmbäck. The chairs were presented at last year’s Salone Inernazionale del Mobile in Milan under the name ‘NamNam Chair’. These were mixed with vintage chairs and some oak versions of Arne Jacobsen’s ”Seagull”. The result is joyous, relaxed and elegant at once. Perfection.
