Stockholm-based design studio Layered introduced two distinctive rug collections created in collaboration with artists — Evelina Kroon’s Rya Collection, where tactile graphics meet Scandinavian heritage, and Teklan Collection with architectural precision in textile form. Not only are the collections quite brilliant, but the campaign shoots for both are equally impressive.

Artist Evelina Kroon brings her signature graphic vocabulary with a collection of hand-knotted Rya rugs crafted in 100% New Zealand wool. The collection reimagines the traditional Scandinavian long-pile rug—a format with roots in 15th-century Norway—through a contemporary lens focused on tactility, volume, and rhythm.

“I, for one, am longing for a worthy return of the iconic dust collector,” says Kroon, referencing the rya rug’s historical reputation whilst championing its aesthetic potential.

Working closely with Layered’s design team, Kroon has translated her analogue sketches into five distinct patterns. Each design features colour palettes developed to work both individually and in dialogue with one another across the collection.

The shaggy pile introduces a new softness to Kroon’s typically rigid grid structures. “I like working in parallel—it gives the whole collection life. The patterns get to play with each other, contradict and complement. That’s how a collection is built, not as a series of solos but as a choir,” explains Kroon. This evolution represents a significant shift in her practice: “The grid or check pattern is looser than ever—an important step forward for me.”

Educated at Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm, Kroon’s work explores the intersection of art, design, and decorative expression, often connecting to traditionally female craft practices.

Colourist and designer Tekla Evelina Severin’s second collection for Layered comprises six tufted wool rugs that explore spatiality, scale, and perception through three core patterns, each offered in two colourways.

Building on her debut Prism Collection, Severin moves beyond colour-blocking into more complex territory: framing devices, optical effects, and three-dimensional illusions. The collection draws from references spanning classical architecture to the precise rhythm of tiled surfaces, with particular inspiration from Carlo Scarpa’s Brutalist monument La Tomba Brion.

“Working with rugs is like sketching a new geography for a room—you influence how people move, how they perceive scale and surfaces,” notes Severin. “I like the idea that a rug can either enhance a space or create a deliberate break within it.”

The three patterns each offer distinct approaches: Diagonal reinterprets the stripe through rotation and subtle contouring. Labyrinth constructs a graphic structure with three-dimensional qualities, drawing from Severin’s spatial installations in Coral Pink and Mulberry Sand. Fregio functions as a floor frieze, defining rather than filling space, offered in Butter Blossom and Olive Blush—the latter inspired by the iconic outfits of Pippi Longstocking and Annika.

“Teklan has a rare ability to use colour as a tool to deepen and elevate pattern,” says Malin Glemme, founder and Creative Director at Layered. “She sees the rug as a canvas and keeps pushing the boundaries of what a rug can be—with a clarity and precision that never fails to surprise.”

Known for her “warm minimalism” aesthetic, Severin graduated from Konstfack University in 2010 and has exhibited work internationally across cities including Berlin, Los Angeles, and New York.
