Vintage Bed Linen and Raw Metal Collide in Radical Romance Lighting Collection.

This collaboration between Vienna-based fashion label Laricha and newly launched multidisciplinary design studio Objects of Random Kindness (OORK) resulted in a limited-edition lighting collection Radical Romance.

The project is notable not only as the first partnership between the two practices but also as OORK’s inaugural project, setting the tone for the studio’s craft-led, material-driven approach to object design.

Radical Romance consists of three unique lighting pieces, each handmade in Vienna as part of a small, limited edition run. The collection takes patchwork traditions as its starting point and translates them into an exploration of textile heritage, material contrast and handcraft.

The lamps feature handcrafted metal bodies that form protective yet expressive shells, deliberately retaining patina, scratches and traces of making. Where seams would usually connect fabric, here rivets hold the metal together—a detail that speaks to the collection’s central tension between softness and strength.

The lampshades, by contrast, are composed of vintage textiles sourced from Laricha’s archive. Once Austrian bed linen, the carefully selected fabrics are assembled into patchwork compositions showcasing a wide spectrum of colours and patterns. Visible seam allowances are turned outward, highlighting imperfection as a design statement rather than something to be concealed.

Each piece varies in height, patchwork arrangement and shade design, reflecting the individuality of both material and process. No two lamps are alike.

A Meeting of Practices

The collaboration brings together two distinct but complementary approaches. Laricha, founded in 2019 as a collaboration between Kasa Schild and Vienna-based fashion label MESHIT, creates garments from hand-selected vintage bed linen sourced in Austria. All pieces are made from 100% recycled natural fabrics and locally manufactured in Vienna. The name “Laricha” derives from an old Upper Austrian term for bed sheet—a nod to the project’s cultural and material roots.

OORK, the studio of Vienna-based designer Tanja Hainzl, works across objects, furniture and spaces with a focus on intuitive design and hands-on craft. Every piece is crafted by hand and produced in small, limited series, valuing individuality over serial uniformity.

Together, Laricha’s sustainable textile practice and OORK’s object-based design language have produced lighting pieces that feel both radical yet tender, and functional yet romantic—a fitting introduction for a studio whose name, objects of random kindness, already suggests a generous, thoughtful approach to making.
