Recently launched in Sydney, ahead of its impending international reveal at Milan Design Week 2018, is a new capsule collection from Adelaide-based designer Jon Goulder and design retailer Fiona Lyda of Spence & Lyda. Called Innate, the collection is the first collaboration between the dynamic pair. Intended to have a distinct Australian sensibility, Innate is resolutely spare, lean, elegant, and made from markedly Australian materials.

In the series are essential pieces for the home—an armchair, credenza, console, and coffee and side tables. Each is rendered in laser-cut materials like Adelaide black granite, laminated and moulded saddle leathers, and Australian hardwood timbers with uncommon finishes. Jon and Fiona’s idea for Innate was to allow the materials to remain in their most natural and simple states.

The first range is titled Night, and features moody black leather, brass accents, midnight black powder-coated aluminium, finely honed dark stone, and Tasmanian oak and blackwood. Through a process of ‘pickling’, timber has been darkened by applying vinegar blackened by steeped steel wool. The tannins in each native timber react differently— contrasting deep blacks with softer smoky taupes.
