Grechka Lab Bakery Moscow Veter Design Yellowtrace 05

Grechka Lab Bakery by Veter Design is a new hospitality venue in Moscow that fuses together nostalgic memories of a slow-paced past with the intensity of contemporary living. The original 1914 Soviet-era building stands as a distillation of its vibrant and long history, the structure once housing an old bakery many years ago.

The one hundred square meter space captures a feeling of stepping back in time, with Veter sensitively layering character with loaded, restored existing materials, and a soft, natural-toned palette of modern injections. Customers become surrounded by textural walls, curving timber pieces and a window display of soft, fluffy flowers reminiscent of rows of growing wheat fields.

Huge windows on each side of the building’s façade bring in natural light, reflecting off the clean white tiled walls before casting shadows on the soft green leather bench seat. As a result, the space feels airy and open, the idyllic background for a lazy Sunday with freshly baked bread and meandering conversation.

The space envelops its guests in such a way that it would be hard for them to not slide into the rhythm of life existing within its walls. However, this sense of ease and quiet is interrupted, in differing levels of intensity, with bold statements of the contemporary world existing outside. The glowing blue light of the neon door sits as a bold element, surrounded by other much quieter moments. These seemingly incongruent pieces bring dimension and interest to the space, allowing the designers from Veter to “combat commonplace and ingrained patterns… giving an object individuality”.
