A facial bar is one place that definitely requires a beautifully designed interior, serving as a precursor to whatever relaxing treatment the customers have in store. Scott & Scott Architects achieved a bold but calming aesthetic with Fig Facial Bar in Vancouver, run by partners Jessica Walsh and Anita Chan. Offering innovative treatments backed by science and technology, the facial bar uses only clean, environmentally sound products.

Occupying just 37sqm in an early 1900’s shopfront, the facial bar is complemented by neighbouring health and lifestyle boutiques and fitness studios. Green perforated steel clads the walls, forming scalloped nooks with glass skeleton shelves to display product and select inventory. Scott & Scott stripped back the space to reveal the full height of the original ceilings and timber rafters, onto which they extended the green steel to form a coffered effect.

Following the colour palette of a fig, a system of integrated details and velvet curtains are utilized to create an immersive experience with soft acoustics and illumination. The full-height curtains conceal three private pods, used for skin treatments and injections, creating a uniform enclosure. Within each pod is a Japanese Barber chair upholstered in green leather.

Durable stone, terrazzo, metal and glass elements counter soft materials in zones where hygiene is paramount. Metal and timber wall units contain treatment supplies, equipment, a mirror and space to hang bags and coats. Dark green marble accents the store, topping a central service counter, a built-in waiting seat and round shelves.
