Jute is one of those materials interior designers reach for instinctively. It grounds a room, adds tonal warmth, and brings a kind of quiet, tactile honesty that synthetic fibres can’t fake. It’s also been used in rug making for thousands of years, which is part of its enduring appeal—and part of the problem. Traditional jute has always been notoriously precious to live with. Spill a glass of red on it, and you’re basically writing it off.

Enter Double’s new Washable Natural Jute collection, which launched on Thursday, 7 May 2026 and represents what’s believed to be a category first: a genuinely washable rug made from natural jute, not a synthetic look-alike pretending to be the real thing.

This is a meaningful distinction. Most washable rugs currently on the market lean on synthetic fibres or jute-look materials to dodge the durability problem. Double has gone the harder route—keeping the actual fibre and engineering around it.

“Jute has always been one of the most beautiful natural fibres we work with. It has also always been the most difficult to live with. This collection is our answer to that contradiction,” says Abigail Agwunobi, Co-Founder & COO of Double.

The construction is where the innovation lies. Double developed the rugs using a refined jute yarn—spun finer than traditional jute fibre—combined with a stabilising cotton weft and a traditional handwoven flat weave. Together, these elements allow the rug to withstand controlled laundering without becoming stiff, brittle, or losing its shape. It’s a rare moment of genuine material innovation in a category that often hides behind marketing speak.

“The breakthrough came from rethinking the fibre itself. We found a way to give jute the flexibility it needed to handle washing without breaking down. The result was a rug the category hadn’t seen before,” explains Agwunobi.

The collection introduces three patterns—Tile, Palisade and Vestige—rendered in a palette of natural tones with occasional muted colour accents. The designs hold onto that grounding presence jute is loved for, while introducing a more considered graphic language than the usual chunky weave we’ve come to expect. By weight, the rugs are roughly 40% jute, 40% wool and 20% cotton, with the wool reserved for those colour accents.

For Double, this launch continues a clear material trajectory. The brand has already expanded into washable New Zealand wool and organic cotton, and washable jute feels like the logical next step—arguably the most technically ambitious one yet.
