AntiRoom II is a conceptual design project in Malta; a ‘floating island’ accessible only by a lengthy swim or boat ride. The circular timber structure was designed and constructed by three architects, Elena Chiavi, Ahmad el Mad and Matteo Goldoni, along with a group of visiting European students as part of the EASA 2015 Links Workshop.

The aim was to design a meditative structure that would conjure contemplative experiences, and reach beyond the concepts of time. Artfully achieving these goals, the circular shape of the space creates a poetic separation between the vastness of the ocean and the structure’s inner sanctum – the small and secure water pool. Repetition of linear elements in the decking contribute to the structure’s never-ending feeling, and its lightness and purity is enhanced by its white colouring in contrast to the deep blue sea. Completing the temple-like structure are the suspended white veils, which personify meditative breathing as they blow in the breeze and add to AntiRoom II’s sense of security and privacy.

to bad the designers did not incorporate some organic shapes for sitting and reclining. Althought not mentioned, it would be nice if the fabric was a sunblock type. In the States we would have to worry about mediocre swimmers trying to reach the island and drowning. I’m sure someone would try and blame the designers. Does the island stay morred where it is located?
