When Dimore Studio got their hands on this 18th century Milanese Palazzo, they conceived the apartment as “a container for contemporary life.” Approached as a place to house collected objects, the designers curated a series of pieces from distant times and places. These pieces have been arranged in refreshingly unexpected combinations.

Although there is a subtle hint of a vaulted ceiling above, the dark, velvety walls divert your attention to the objects at eye level, which are luminous in comparison. This invites us to engage with the space more intimately. The space is understood as a series of human scaled vignettes rather than a singular volume or gesture. It’s not outwardly grand in terms of scale but it is certainly grandiose. This has much to do with the richness of the palette – silk rugs, oxidised metals, aged timbers, glossy table surfaces and textural artwork. The opulence of these textures mixed with the drama of the natural lighting imbue this space with a sense of theatre.

Although the objects have been sourced from alternate times and places, they have been brought together with a contemporary Milanese sensibility. The lusciousness of the textures and theatrical nature of the space undoubtedly carry the stamp of a Milan design practice.
