Completed in 2009, Restaurant 560 occupies 80sqm of an old building’s street level in Lisbon’s city centre. The interior is divided into three disctinct zones – the shopfront and entry, dining space in the middle and a service area at the back. The existing building presented a challenge with a heritage stair dividing the dining area in half. To address this, João Tiago Aguiar arquitectos strategically used three distinctly different materials to delineate each zone and, in turn, unify the divided dining space.

The restored shopfront and entry is wrapped in white lit marble which welcomes guests on arrival. The dining space is skinned in OSB which is occasionally perforated and lit from behind. The service area wall is clad with striking Portuguese black tiles.

What I really love about this interior is the way the entry is celebrated and treated as it’s own event – there is a definite transition from the street, through the entry, into the restaurant. I also love the unusual mix of marble, raw OSB, and super beautiful, ornate and glossy wall tiles which provide an arresting visual crescendo at the end of the space. Committed use of these three contrasting materials gives the restaurant a very unique edge.
