Sometimes the most charming design stories begin with a little bit of mystery. When the team at Sdelaem Remont was approached by a client wanting to gift an apartment to her child, there was one small detail missing—she wasn’t sure which child would be moving in. “It might be for my son, or maybe my daughter—I’m not sure yet!” she explained. This uncertainty became the project’s greatest strength, pushing the designers to create a space that could work beautifully for anyone.Located in a new residential complex in Almaty, Kazakhstan, this 39-square-metre apartment (plus an 8-square-metre balcony) ultimately became home to the client’s daughter, who was absolutely thrilled with the outcome. The project holds special significance for the design team as their smallest apartment to date, yet it’s also one of their most daring.“We truly appreciated the creative freedom we were given—and we think we pulled off one of the most daring layouts in the city,” the designers explain. Without knowing the future occupant’s personality or preferences, they focused on creating a flexible, welcoming environment that balances personality with practicality. One of the apartment’s standout features is the seamless colour transition between the curtains and flooring. This detail creates visual continuity that makes the space feel larger and more cohesive. The soft, enveloping tone provides the perfect backdrop for the dining area, adding warmth without overwhelming the compact footprint. The kitchen thoughtfully “hugs” the bedroom lightbox—a solution that embraces both functionality and intimacy. Strategic storage solutions include a bottom drawer for everyday use on one side, while a false facade on the reverse maintains clean lines and symmetry.Recognising the need for practical solutions among young city dwellers, the designers incorporated a dedicated laundry space, essential for maintaining order in a compact home. This hidden utility room provides storage for folding chairs, cleaning products, suitcases, and other bulky items, helping the apartment function like a much larger space. The boldest design decision? Placing the shower directly in the bedroom, just steps from the bed. “We weren’t sure if the client would agree, but to our delight, she did!” A high curb contains water, while polymer flooring provides practical protection against any stray drips. With no obvious place for a television, the team looked up—literally—and installed a retractable projector screen perfect for cozy movie nights with friends.Featuring custom furniture alongside pieces from Magis, Nordic Knots, and Verpan, this project proves that even the smallest spaces can become the most meaningful homes when designed with heart and imagination.
