Rondure House Residences in Kew are Australian First International Collaboration with Tom Dixon | Yellowtrace

Melbourne property developer, Above Zero, is about to bring to market an Australian first collaboration with renowned British designer, Tom Dixon and acclaimed Australian firms Cera Stribley and Eckersley Garden Architecture, on a landmark residential apartment development in tightly held Studley Park in Kew.

Rondure House’s 1,710sqm site will be developed into a luxury residential development with only fourteen residences, including a penthouse with panoramic views to the city and the Macedon Ranges.

Above Zero ran a design competition with the winning facade and building design by Cera Stribley celebrating the modernist architectural history of Studley Park’s much-revered stature. Cera Stribley engaged the London based Tom Dixon’s Design Research Studio in an Australian residential first, to collaborate on the interior design for the project.

“We will be delivering bespoke features across the residences, communal spaces and lobby including yet to be released furniture and lighting items,” says Tom Dixon. “Our intention is to deliver an exceptional experience for future residents. From the building entrance to the proposed customisable furniture in each apartment – each detail is considered.”

The architecture will see off-form concrete hyperbolic concrete columns serve both a decorative and structural function, allowing for glazed corners with views of Studley Park and vast open plan living spaces inside. The use of hand-made bricks refers back to the 60s era, where materiality was minimal and long-lasting.

“Rondure House is deeply contextual to its physical surroundings and architectural heritage,” says Cera Stribley’s Managing Director, Dom Cerantonio. “This area of Kew has always been synonymous with Australian Brutalist architecture, with several homes built by notable post-modern architects such as Robyn Boyd and Roy Grounds. These houses formed part of the Australian brutalism movement in the ’50s and ’60s which changed the way we looked at architecture in Australia.”

Future residents will experience exceptional views or large open and expansive gardens by Eckersley from each apartment, who also designed a green roof that, along with the plantation of 15 canopy trees throughout the site, ensured the building fits in seamlessly with Studley Park’s highly revered tree canopies.

“From the street front gardens and entry path to the upper terraces and finally, to the roof gardens, you will feel a connection with the garden with the texture on the surface as well as the planting combinations,” says Scott Leung, Director and Principal Designer, Eckersley Garden Architecture. “Subtleties in the different light and aspect from interiors to outdoor rooms will also be noticed in the plant species.”

To seal the unrepeatable offering, the development pays particular attention to the entries and communal spaces. Residents will be greeted with a grand lobby and art gallery on the ground level and a porte-cochere in the basement, along with a Tom Dixon-designed and furnished Opal Bar & Lounge.

Cera Stribley have also worked closely with Tom Dixon’s Design Research Studio to formulate a unique concept of ‘The Vaults’. These privately titled multi-purpose rooms for each residence will be located on the ground floor. Each 10sqm Vault will be fully customisable to each purchaser. These spaces will act as an extension of residences with multiple proposed uses including home office, private theatre, art storage, wine or whiskey cellar, or even a cycling or golf simulator.

“Our philosophy is to create experiences for occupiers of our buildings, which they would not be able to collectively experience elsewhere,” says Above Zero Director, AJ Batra. “Our buyers are discerning, well-educated and well-travelled and we felt that the collaboration with Tom [Dixon] has appealed to buyers who appreciate design and are seeking a home with rare brilliance, incomparable to anything else.”

Rondure House will be launching to the general public in late March. The residences start at $1.5 million and Private VIP display suite appointments are now available. For more info and to register your interest, head to the Rondure House website.
