The Perth-born furniture powerhouse’s latest move represents quite the design moment for Sydney.Opened in April, the new space marks a significant evolution for what began as a small furniture workshop back in 1969. Founded by Italian immigrant Tony Fazzari, Mobilia has transformed from modest manufacturing beginnings in Perth into a national design force passionate about storied design, craftsmanship and innovation. The company now represents some of the world’s most coveted designer furniture giants in Australia, with Cassina, Poltrona Frau, Moroso, Kettal, and CC-Tapis headlining the distinguished brand line-up.The showroom occupies a prime spot within the Time and Place development at 25 Bourke Road, designed by John Wardle Architects with communal space by Flack Studio. The architecture alone is worth the visit, with its seamless integration of landscape and urban experiences. But we’re here to talk about what you can find on the inside. Interior design studio Golden (who are also behind Mobilia’s Melbourne location) has crafted spaces that balance intimacy with openness, creating a perfect backdrop for the impressive roster of global brands—many making their Sydney debut.“Mobilia needed a space that could capture an eclectic spirit while remaining cohesive,” says Kylie Buhagiar, Golden’s Director. “It was essential the environment could support a diverse range of high-end collections, allowing each to have its own moment while existing harmoniously within a unified setting.” Golden utilised scale and materiality to achieve a spatial rhythm that naturally establishes hierarchy throughout the interior. The brand line-up reads like a who’s who of design royalty. Cassina (the Italian pioneers since 1927 who’ve worked with masters like Le Corbusier and contemporary icons like Patricia Urquiola); Poltrona Frau (masters of Italian leather craftsmanship since 1912), Moroso (the avant-garde brand redefining furniture aesthetics since 1952), Kettal (Spanish specialist in contemporary outdoor furniture) and CC-Tapis (renowned for hand-knotted rugs and artistic textiles).“We scoured Sydney high and low for the perfect location,” says Mobilia’s Founder, Salvatore Fazzari, who has led the company for 17 years. “When we came across this site, we instantly fell in love. It felt like the perfect setting for our new Sydney home.” Designer Michael Anastassiades at Mobilia’s Sydney showroom. Portrait by Sean Fennessy. For Salvatore, the expansion holds personal significance, continuing a family legacy while bringing European design excellence to a national audience. “I grew up immersed in design and craftsmanship, watching my father work in his workshop,” he explains. “Through our partnerships with the world’s most iconic design houses, we have built a reputation as Australia’s trusted representative for high-end furniture.”More than a showroom, this design destination offers indoor and outdoor furnishings, lighting, and rugs across two distinct spaces. The flagship aims to make high-end design more accessible and less intimidating, inviting visitors to explore thoughtfully curated displays, receive personalised consultations, and engage with furniture pieces in an inspiring environment. With this final piece of their national expansion complete, Mobilia has come a long way from its humble workshop beginnings, emerging as a true custodian of some of the world’s most iconic and innovative brands in Australia.
