When you’re perched among Australia’s highest homes, every design decision matters. Cloud Residence in Melbourne’s Southbank, undertaken by Furnishd, speaks to the power of thoughtful curation in transforming a lofty apartment into something that feels like living among the clouds.

The golden hour becomes the space’s most crucial design element. As sunset light floods through floor-to-ceiling glass, it transforms surfaces and creates an ever-changing interior landscape. Furnishd’s approach didn’t just focus on the view, but also on how light shapes daily living at this altitude.

The open-plan living and dining area serves as the anchor of the design philosophy. In the dining zone, the WuDai Walnut Dining Table by Wei Wu for Studio Base pairs with Diiva Swivel Stools from Grazia & Co, while the Gubi Matégot Trolley adds functional sculpture. An Ethnicraft Mahogany Zuil Sculpture from Front Room Gallery and Robbie Harmsworth’s artwork, “Luminescence,” via Studio Gallery, bring warmth and visual focus to the space.

The living area centres around HC28’s Spin Sectional Sofa via Domo—aptly cloud-like in its soft presence. Clare Cousins’ Ivy Coffee Table for Grazia & Co provides an architectural counterpoint, while Jörg Boner’s Oyster Armchairs for Wittmann via Domo create sculptural moments throughout. A Kartell Thierry Side Table by Piero Lissoni via Space Furniture and the Asola Floor Lamp in vert bronze from Lignet Roset complete the composition.

The master bedroom completely shifts the mood. Deep, textured upholstery and layered bedding create intimacy against the expansive cityscape, while Cini Boeri’s sculptural Arflex Botolo Armchair via Space Furniture offers a quiet reading nook. Muted tones and subtle metallic accents in side tables and lighting maintain warmth without competing with the panoramic views.

Both the second bedroom and home office continue this restrained approach. The AS1C Table Lamp by Nemo—a 1969 design combining linear forms with hand-blown glass diffusers—exemplifies the project’s attention to lighting detail throughout.

Cloud Residence understands the delicate balance between intimacy and openness. Rather than overwhelming the senses, the calm and moody spaces work with the ethereal quality of high-altitude living. The result feels genuinely elevated—both literally and figuratively.
