The young design collective DOTTOD has unveiled a unique collection of furniture designed in conjunction with advanced AI technologies. Held at the Il Lacions design gallery in Barcelona, the studio utilised AI to create a series of interpretations of iconic design pieces.
“This process results in unconventional visual representations of well-known design classics, while also illustrating the creative potential of AI and the role of human designers in transforming digital ideas into functional physical objects,” the collective elaborates.
Named ‘Icon’s Replicants’, DOTTOD selected five iconic modernist chairs and a selection of small significant objects, including Frank Gehry’s Contour Chair, Enzo Mari’s Sedia, Alvar Aalto’s Stool 60 and Andre Ricard’s Ashtray. The official descriptions of the objects were used as a prompt for an intelligent machine capable of translating images into art forms from text descriptions. Once the images were generated, the design duo built the functional prototypes in real life.
The shift from traditional design methodology challenged the designers to exhibit meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail, striving to bring the AI’s vision to life while preserving the functionality and integrity of the original designs.
The project showcases the refreshing perspective AI can bring to furniture design and how we can bridge the relationship between the digital and physical realms in design.
Icon’s Replicants exhibition is on view until September 15 at Il Lacions design gallery in Barcelona. For more information click here.
