In ASKA’s latest refurbishment project, beauty clinic MBS by Malika, the designers offer a new interpretation of an iconic Scandinavian design era. Located in central Stockholm, the team were inspired by the building’s architecture, dating back to the 30s. ASKA looked to the revival of the Scandinavian modern style Nordic functionalism or Funkis within this 70-square-metre ground floor space.

The atmosphere inside could be described as “modern nostalgia”, as some of the elements feel familiar, giving the space a rigid and trustworthy flavour. In contrast, other fragments are unexpected, adding a sharp and slightly playful touch. The overall design feels effortless but surprising.

Dominated by typical Funkis materials, the salon is layered in slightly rounded Alvar Aalto-inspired white tiles, oak veneer, compact laminate and structural glass. By adding details like the nickel-plated brass handles, linen textiles, and porcelain floor tiles inspired by the Swedish Ekeberg marble, the architects were looking to add elegance and exclusiveness to the experience. Although traditional in style, the fresh light blue colour accents add a modern and bold touch to the space.

“We saw potential in adding luxury, softness and a young vibe to this simple, strict and socialist-style,” says ASKA co-founder Polina Sandström. “Believing that something new and unique could rise from the merge.”

In order to reach a conceptually strong and effective result, the duo works with different scales and disciplines, including the design of most of the furniture. The cream-coloured lounge tables and manicure stations are some of the pieces specially designed by ASKA for MBS. The reception desk is something of a key piece, designed to capture the visitors focus thanks to its size and level of detailing.

It is clear all separate objects are designed to complement the rest of the architecture. The shape of the pseudo three arch reappears in the form of the table-tops, the foot panel melts together with the product shelf, while the blue grout on the reception desk goes hand in hand with the MBS logo.
