‘La Piscina del Roccolo’ designed by act_romegialli architecture studio is a luxurious indoor swimming pool set in a historic home in Italy. The concept for the project was to create a pool and bathing house that would capitalise on the views of the countryside, providing an ideal space for exercise, relaxation, and connecting with nature. The result is a humble structure that nestles into the hilly site.

The western end of the building features a long stretch of windows placed adjacent to the pool, which provides a visual connection to the landscape. In the warmer months this glazed wall slides open, creating an indoor/outdoor bathing experience. Much of the structure is housed underground, so the building’s impact on the landscape is kept to a minimum. The locker rooms and fitness centre are placed in this underground area, allowing the pool to have interrupted views to the outside.

White mosaic tiles mingle with oak accents and exposed concrete within the interior. This marriage of materials brings depth and dimension to an otherwise simple space. The design team explains that this conscious choice of  “continuity of material creates an effect – a mass of water finds its natural resting state and settles in the lowest part of the volume, held by a dynamic and at the same time gentle form before it slowly follows its course down to quietly settle in the pool.” Stone walls and plenty of plant life ensure the exterior structure remains integrated with its environment.
