For years now I’ve been telling you about my love for beautiful historic buildings. Funnily enough this hasn’t change since I last spoke about it. I’m hoping you don’t mind me sharing yet another fantastic example of a building where the sprit of the original house was beautifully preserved, while crafting a vibrant contemporary home overflowing with charm and character. Is there a better combination to be had? I think not.

Located in Interlaken in Bernese Oberland (Bernese Highlands) in Switzerland, this beautiful 200 year-old farmhouse dates back to early 1800s. In 1890, the property was turned into a country house. This year, the chalet was lovingly refurbished by Zürich-based agency Bergdorf in collaboration with Berne-based architect Nick Ruef.

So many beautiful things about this home that I love. The overall character has both feet firmly in the past, although there are number of moments where contemporary furniture and lighting pieces create a lovely tension and provide a real sense of joy within the space. Each rooms makes me feel like I want to curl up in a chair and stay there forever. A beautiful balance between the sense of formality and a warm, inviting, and nurturing interior. 10 points from me.

Oh yes, and more images in the gallery below. I simply couldn’t resist including them all! It’s ok, you can thank me later…

What I love about this most is the colour palette and that the owner doesn’t need every surface to be perfect, I love the honesty of the history and that they have been true to the design and era, yet it is elegantly contemporary.

The (awful) PVC waste pipe is the only incongruous element in an otherwise beautiful job…but I just can’t unsee it.
