• Maison Champs-Elysées by Maison Martin Margiela | Paris.

Located within the historic Maison de Centraliens, in a corner of Paris which gathers all of the most prestigious French couture houses, Hotel Maicson Champs-Elysées opened its doors a month ago having received a face-lift by Maison Martin Margiela. The five-star hotel features 57 rooms, 5 junior suites and 6 suites.

MMM’s involvement extended through most of the hotel interior – from the suites, restaurant, smoking room, bar and through to reception, giving them all a signature surreal atmosphere. Aiming to redefine what you might expect from a hotel and bring you a new lifestyle experience, Hotel Maison Champs-Elysées is designed with simplicity, yet full of abundant details.

We are happy to reinterpret another house for our first hotel project in Paris. We have created a theatrical environment where reality and trompe-l’oeil are mixing together. The result is several sets with intertwined references giving an atypical ambiance harmoniously opposing past and present.’ – Maison Martin Margiela.

Ok. Truth time. When I first spotted this hotel, I was so excited to blog about it. I thought to myself – oh, this is fabulous. But now that I’ve had the time to consider it a bit more, I can’t help but feel as though parts of it are plain tacky and unresolved. Btw, I totally realise this is ME bagging the fabulous MMM (and I do feel slightly bad about that), but at the same time I continue to bounce between loving it and hating it in parts. So I guess I really don’t know how I feel about it any more.

    What do you think?

That Mr Martin Margiela is a very talented man.
I love his respect for the old and play with the now.
I would love to stay there!

The mushrooms are my favourite part!!

    5. It slightly freaks me out – its got a ghost like feeling that I can’t quite wrap my head around.

I actually like the mushrooms but agree its a tad surreal but I think they work with the floor boards.

I would love to see what it would be like in the flash. Maybe it would feel more light and airy with a hint of mystery and less “who you gonna call… Ghostbusters”

A simple-Susan (like me), doesn’t get it. Good design should be understood by all, even if it is in different ways. I think, The designer had too much money to play with, so he imported some mushrooms on steroids. They would have been better used in some yummy French dish….
