Stanton Williams and Universal Design Studio have recently completed the extensive renovations of the 12-storey, flagship workspace of The Office Group (TOG). Located in Albert Embankment in Vauxhall, central London, Tintagel House is the former home of the Metropolitan Police.

TOG is a leading provider of flexible offices, meeting rooms and coworking spaces for start-ups, small businesses as well as larger, more established businesses. So it makes sense that the interior was going to have to be varied, layered, public, private and meet multiple uses. Universal Design Studio has successfully achieved this objective. Designing both secluded quiet corners through to socially-driven public areas, each space has been designed with a strong visual identity.

There are a series of engaging moments that unfold across the 12 floors. From the double height drop curtain that surrounds the circular informal meeting space, the café style 2 seater banquettes that line the perimeter glass windows perfect for working alone or for low key meetings, a Secret Room – a speakeasy-style member’s only space concealed behind a cleaner’s cupboard door entrance. The materials selection and colour palettes are sophisticated, creating the perfect backdrop for a range of personalities and businesses that were not necessarily born to be bed-mates. But it is the attention to detail, the lighting, the floor finishes and the furniture selection that is akin to adding a cashmere twinset to a pencil skirt – the whole look just hums.

Taking a sustainable approach, Stanton Williams has expanded and improved the existing 8,800 square meters of office accommodation with the creation of spacious communal areas in new extensions on ground and first floor levels. This expansion of the two levels has re-engaged the building’s frontage, which has been finished in a palette of facing brick and glazed tiles. The new façade references the original concept of the building.

The conversion of the panoramic top floor with its elegant, ‘floating canopy’ roof, has been converted into premium office space. It sits alongside a rooftop bar and terrace, optimising the building’s prominent riverside location and spectacular views across the river of East and West London. If this is flexible workspace… really, could there ever be a reason to want to go home?
