Rather than dread your next dental check-up, Studio Karhad wanted to imbue the excitement and stimulation of a night out with a visit to The Urban Dentist in central Berlin, using colour and texture over the sterile white surfaces often associated with dental anxiety.

Rather than approach the design of this dental clinic in central Berlin through the paradigm of a surgery or medical practice, Studio Karhad applied the layout of a bar or concept store. Colour and texture replace the sterile white surfaces often associated with dental anxiety. Exposed concrete, mirrored surfaces, glass panels and fun pink sofas stand in their place. An ambient system of backlighting changes colour constantly, a dynamic element that helps create a calming atmosphere.

The reception desk at The Urban Dentist is but one non-traditional element employed by Studio Karhard (designers of the legendary Berlin nightclub, Berghain) – a hunk of black stone terrazzo studded with green and golden marble greets the patients.

Studio Karhard is behind Berlin’s most notoriously exclusive and downright hardcore nightclub, Berghain, though they’ve now lent their hand to a slightly different industry, designing The Urban Dentist clinic.
