“There is a grace and beauty in fish that you cannot find in anything else. The slow, fluid motion as they glide through the water, fins and tail rippling softly as they go. They’re hypnotic, even healing, to watch. In Japanese (and Chinese) culture, the Koi represents courage, strength and perseverance, among other things. There is a tale about the brave Koi that swims upstream against the strong currents enduring many hardships and overcoming many obstacles. Finally it reaches the waterfall and as it jumps through it transforms into a magnificent dragon symbolising advancement and aspiration.

This work offers hope through strength. It is a reminder that with perseverance and patience we are able to work through the hardships in life to emerge stronger, wiser and better for it. It is also a work in peace and flow allowing the mind to wander and to daydream which should be given as much priority as food but is usually dismissed.”

“If Only We Could See” is about the beauty of this world that surrounds us every day yet goes unnoticed. We don’t see it because we’re too busy or we don’t understand the language – language of people, language of the land, of colour, of form and of so many other mediums. How much do we miss out on because we don’t take the time to learn or to listen or to look? But beauty is always there lying dormant, waiting to be discovered. If people look long enough at this work, will they feel the message of the words hidden behind the flower?”.

 

You are currently feasting your eyes on the amazing work by an emerging Australian artist Lisa Rodden. Lisa creates delicate and detailed hand cut paper art by slicing, layering, painting and folding to create truly unique 3 dimensional wonders with a chameleon quality. Shadows and colours appear and disappear as the viewer moves around the work, creating an intriguing feeling of a living piece of art.

Having recently moved from Sydney’s Northern Beaches to the Sunshine Coast in sunny Queensland, it certainly seems the sea change is paying off for Lisa. A less cluttered life is making way for more time in the studio, and her beautiful work is what’s come of it.

Lisa’s work can be viewed and purchased at Koskela in Sydney. She is currently a part of a group exhibition titled THREAD PAPER FIBER CLAY. The exhibition runs from June 26th until July 7th at the Depot II Gallery in Danks St, Waterloo in Sydney. You can also meet Lisa tomorrow (Saturday June 30th) between 12pm and 4pm.

  1. beautiful...i have no other words...

    i love your work…i have tried to make this happen in some of my own pieces but just don’t have the patience to make all of those small laborious cuts to make the pattern jump out…have you ever done this on skin? I am into tattooing and scarification and this would be an amazing project if you could find someone to lend you their skills…i love your work…keep it up!
