For the Italian festival Meeting del Mare, art collective ‘Incipit‘ created a wire mesh sculpture as a public art installation. Built by hand, the translucent structure stood on the waterfront of Marina Do Camerota in Italy. The site-specific installation was curated by artist Edoardo Tresoldi together with Simone Pallotta and Antonio Oriente. The architecturally-inspired work features gigantic arched passageways with a flock of birds surrounding its peak.

Tresoldi’s use of the gridded material gives the piece a distinctive presence. Against the blue sky, ‘Incipit’ appears as an ethereal, almost ghostly form, a characteristic that’s intensified with the aid of the birds suspended within the transparent frame. It’s as if the time had stopped, and the circling birds are a memory of what once was.

In case you’re curious, the stop motion video by Fabiano Caputo explains how this installation was put together.
