It’s the first Monday of the month, and you know what that means? It’s Yellowtrace Spotlight time! In this months’ edition of Australian Design News we are sharing a whole bunch of cool stuff like an elegant brick house in Melbourne by Inglis Architects; a new concept store for CAMILLA AND MARC – one of Sydney’s must-visit fashion shopping destinations; Swine & Co – a sexy but sinister new restaurant in Sydney located in the former building of the Bank of New South Wales; stunning products & accessories including lamps, furniture as well as a quirky leather tote bag made from tin, plus so much more – try and keep up!

Fairbairn House in Melbourne by Inglis Architects.

A simple architectural language of masonry, timber & stone was enlisted for the house, located in inner city Melbourne. The light fittings, furniture and soft natural finishes are purposefully simple and pared back. This brick house feels raw whilst achieving elegance through composition, texture, volume, light and program.

CAMILLA AND MARC’s Flagship Store in Sydney’s Paddington.

Housed in an original 19th century Paddington terrace, this new retail store was designed by Kelvin Ho of Akin Creative. Custom steel framed doors give definition and division to the space, while oversized skylights flood light into the interior.. Floors are made of recycled oak herringbone, coupled with coral carpet. A bespoke modern arabesque marble counter is complimented by custom black oxide steel rails with marble shelving.

‘Swine & Co’ Restaurant in Sydney by Melissa Collison.

Interior Designer Melissa Collison has created a vision of grotesque glamour for Urban Purveyor Group’s new tri-level concept restaurant, Swine & Co. An homage to the pig set in a historic art deco era building, the result is a theatrical ambience that combines the sexy with the sinister. Design elements unique to the site (the former Bank of New South Wales building) are married masterfully with the original bank manager and accountant’s office in frosted glass, transforms into a sleek champagne oyster bar.

‘Interior’ credenza by emerging WA designer & maker Brendan Jurich.

This credenza attempts to demonstrate that furniture can initiate a greater spatial presence by generating a prolonged and more engaging experience with the piece. The ‘Interior’, a modernist timeless piece made from American black walnut and Victorian ash, the intertwining of interior and exterior through material rigour has become a stimulus for a new way of thinking about furniture design.

Ipnos light by Nicolette Rossi & Guido Bianchi for FLOS.

An indoor-outdoor LED floor lamp composed of an ultra-light skeleton of thin extruded aluminium profiles, emanating diffused luminosity. In the dark, only pure lines of light emerge, leaving the space inside the lamp empty. The anodised aluminium of ‘Ipnos’ is available with anodised natural, black, brass or copper finishing.

Tin and Leather ‘Atlas Shopper’ by STUDIOLAV.

Young Lonndon design Studio, STUDIOLAV created this tin and leather tote bag in response to the invitation by design retail destination DING to use the traditional tin container as a raw material for a design object. STUDIOLAV turned this cult object into a witty fashion accessory for a daily wander in the city or the interior of a home.

New Design Pieces by Kiko Salomão Architecture.

Brazil based architecture firm Kiko Salomão Arquitetura have created a new collection of furniture, consisting of a side table, a coffee table and a bench, which were designed around the minimalistic aesthetic and chic contemporary influences. “The pieces were originally created for one of our interior design projects, but there was such great acceptance that we decided to produce them separately as design pieces” said Kiko Salomão.
