Villa E in Morocco by Studio KO.

    23rd July

Sitting at the peak of a hill in the Moroccan mountain ranges, Villa E rises up from the landscape, like a form extruded from the earth. The locally sourced Oika stone walling reads like an extension of the landscape. From the road in the valley, only the tiniest window openings pierce through the structure, veiling the life that occurs inside. Hidden within is a private mountain retreat by Studio KO. With studio bases in both Paris and Morocco, Villa E represents the convergence of ideas from both design cultures. Studio KO weave together the contemporary minimalism of Paris with the earthy textures of the Moroccan aesthetic.

Mölle by the Sea by Elding Oscarson // Sweden.

    24th June

Sweden – top three in my list of places I’d be from if I wasn’t from here. Elding Oscarson – similarly top-ranking in the sort of architects I’d be if I was in that league. So what joy today’s post brings – it’s a house in Sweden by Elding Oscarson! We’re out on a peninsula jutting westwards into the sound separating Sweden from Denmark (also top three). In the town of Mölle, stands this Y-shaped house for a young family. The architect’s statement explains that the funny shape was hit upon to address views to all corners of the site, not just the ocean views. I’m normally wary of anything that isn’t a right angle, but there are always exceptions.

Flinders Lane Apartment by Clare Cousins Architects.

    20th June

Flinders Lane Apartment by Clare Cousins Architects is an understated city pad designed for a young family. Located in a heritage-listed building in Melbourne’s CBD, the apartment is blessed with high ceilings and abundant natural light from windows along three of the four walls. The open, functional space utilises readily available, affordable materials to make the most of a small space and a modest budget. Plywood joinery was used to define spaces rather than build walls. The adults bedroom utilises 3 colourful sliding screens, which allow the room to be totally screened from the living room or opened up to allow the bed platform to be used as part of the living space.
