Scandic Grand Central hotel in Stockholm opened it’s doors in November of 2011. And let me tell you, I am having trouble inventing an adequate number of superlatives to describe how much I adore this place. Designed by Stockholm based firm Koncept, the hotel is housed in a building that dates back from 1885 – yet another glorious example of carefully resuscitated heritage building turned into contemporary gold in the hands of intelligent and talented Scandinavian designers (see my previous post about another genius example of similar residential development in Stockholm).

“In the design of newly opened Scandic Grand Central we created a love affair between a grand Vienna-style city palace and the street life of Stockholm. And suddenly, the forgotten building is one of Stockholms most talked about hotels, with a never failing crowd of visitors to the restaurant, music lovers and nightguests. Under the storyline “the urban theater” we created a constantly changing scene, where the street life is a part of the entertainment. The feel of the hotel is unique and strongly grounded in Stockholm.” – Koncept

There is SO MUCH I love about this hotel interior… Abundant use of colour and texture which are carefully considered so they never feel too dominant or overwhelming. Monochromatic corridors which balance the use of colour within rooms and public areas. The patterns on the carpet inside rooms and main corridors inspired by Stockholm’s manhole covers. Sophisticated palette of materials which successfully mixes mundane and expensive, vintage and modern. Impeccably curated collection of lighting and furniture. Etc, etc, etc.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – Scandinavians simply do it better!
