Sarah Meyohas’ ‘Speculations’ is a breathtaking example of what happens when you combine mirrors and photography, two adroit tools this visual alchemist had at her disposal.

The French-American artist has been hard at play with her latest installation and photography series. Part dream world, part other world, part mystic and part magic, ‘Speculations’ draws us seductively into the hypnotising depth of the artist’s images.

Sarah Meyohas is a New York-based artist who works across a multitude of disciplines. She is known for her work in film and photography, performance art and sculpture. In this photographic series, she has used the trickery of mirrors to lure in her audience. Meyohas uses infinite reflections, like a pebble hitting the water and forming ripples, to create these mesmerising images.

At times her image are ethereal, they feel alive and playful, like physical echoes drawing you in, teasing you, daring you to find out what is real and what is not.

Meyohas has used multiple mirrors to create modern trickery. The installation required two mirrors, one two-sided and one wall mounted. The mirrors faced each other so they immediately started to reflect to infinity. Like any good magician, Meyohas had a trick up her sleeve to ensure she wasn’t caught by her own camera while shooting. Crouching behind the two way mirror as she captured the image, she hid in the folds of the endless reflections.

Meyohas applies a range of materials to embellish the mirror, smoke (a neat little reference to smoke and mirrors), daisies, rose petals, pastel backdrops, crumpled up paper, lengths of rope. Even a pair of hands cheekily wraps their fingers around each side of the mirror repeating themselves into infinity in the sunny yellow reflection.

In the end, Sarah Meyohas simply wants to seduce the viewer. She wants to draw us into the ‘void’, the depth of the photograph, like a pied piper drawing you past your own comfort zone. She says she wants us to feel like we’re standing on the edge of a precipice, which is a decidedly disarming thought, even if it is a particularly beautiful, enthralling edge of the world.
