Let’s kick 2013 off with a bit of sparkle, shall we? This luminous adventureland is brought to you by LIKE Architects in partnership with Ikea. Yes, what you’re seeing here is one stellar Ikea hack.

The architects used HEMMA floor bases cut at various lengths, fitted LEDARE lamps- Ikea’s new energy saving bulbs which this installation promotes. The gridded maze of lamps flooded the concourse at the Belém Cultural Centre in Portugal. The lamps were programmed to have oscillating intensities, with each lamp possessing its own rhythm. The result is an immersive, shimmering environment in constant flux.

Now I’m pretty sure the purpose of an energy saving light bulb is cancelled out when multiplied by 1200, but if you’re willing to overlook this odd little contradiction, it’s one clever, playful and engaging installation.

    1. [...] As part of a promotional effort to promote a new line of lighting solutions, IKEA Portugal partnered with LIKE Architects to create this fun illuminated walkway in the Belém Cultural Centre in Portugal. The lamps are programmed to have oscillating intensities, with each light possessing a unique pattern that results in a sort of shimmering maze of bare lightbulbs. See much more over on Domus.
