Jody Xiong has created a mind-blowing collaboration between man and machine, art and science, expression and technology. ‘Mind Art’ was conceived for the world’s leading acrylic paint brand Winsor & Newton in China, designed to raise awareness for the disabled community.

16 people with physical disabilities were recruited via social media to participate in this innovative experiment, aimed to show that “the power of the mind could trump the body’s limitations”. Their chosen paint colours were placed in balloons equipped with tiny detonators. Four large blank canvases surrounded these balloons on all sides. Electric signals from their brain are captured and transmitted to a Neurosky processing unit then trigger detonators attached to the balloon, resulting in an explosion of paint, splattering on all four walls. Each painting was sold for 800 Renminbi (approx $150 AUD), with money donated to different charities focused on disability issues.

Xiong has been connecting ideas of expression and technology for over 16 years. With a background in creative advertising, he is adept at capturing people’s attention with interesting, simple ideas. He is known as an expert and innovator in the worlds of painting, environmental design, video and other cutting-edge technologies.
