Fred International is a Scandinavian furniture import business, with a brand new Sydney showroom in Rosebery, designed by yours truly. Just like they say – there’s a first time for everything, and today is one of those “firsts” because I’m sharing with you one of our own projects. Wowee! This feels slightly nerve-wracking to say the least, but I’m doing this for a greater cause (or at least that’s what I’m telling myself).

In case you haven’t already visited Fred’s showroom, just imagine a space full to the brim with some of the best Scandinavian furniture, lighting and home-wares available in Australia. But don’t just take my word for it – have a little browse through Fred’s website if you’re not already familiar with the range. It’s seriously stunning. Michael Liira started the business in 2007, and since then I’ve had the good fortune of working with him on a couple of other occasions – both as his designer (for his family home) and as his client (where Michael supplied products for some of my other projects).

Lamino Chair in oak frame and white sheepskin upholstery (the only way to roll if you ask me) – in case you’re not familiar with it, this chair is a true classic and voted “The 20th Century’s Best Swedish Furniture Design”. A stack of Spin stools in various colours. Swedese Tree in yellow (to offset the yellow trim to pegboard wall, which you can barely see but I though I’d mention it cause I’m particularly fond of it). Various artwork from I Need Nice ThingsPhoto by Nick Hughes for Yellowtrace.

The main challenge with this project was the limited amount of space. With so much awesome product from Fred to showcase, it was absolutely critical the end result didn’t look cluttered. With future flexibility in mind, the showroom was configured as a single open space. A number of loose “sets” were created, giving each brand their own dedicated space wherever possible. All the furniture and lighting pieces were considered holistically – from their shape, scale and finish, allowing each “set” to have a strong sense of unique character, whilst allowing the showroom to feel unified as a whole.

In addition to the showroom, this space also houses the office and engine room for three businesses – Fred, I Need Nice Things (brilliant range of affordable art featured throughout the showroom) and War Design (graphic design company responsible for the trippy black dot wall – super cool or what?)
