This clever little fitout by Portuguese architecture studio Fala Atelier is a transformation of an old clothing store in Porto into a real estate agency. The base building was already refurbished in the early 1990s, so the client gave the architects a very lean budget and short mount of time (such a winning combination – not!) to perform a miracle. Fala Atelier created an interior by adding a few elements in a simple spatial organisation. For feature partitions and furniture, the studio used different colours and types of marble, which in Portugal is a relatively cheap material (that’s it – I’m moving to Portugal).

Grey marble for the desks, green marble for the partitions between workstations, and black marble for the reception desk were used in an otherwise white interior. The company’s green logo is reflected in the same tone of green marble, creating a connection to brand identity.

The main work area is connected to the meeting room by a circular window which balances the weight of the marble in the spatial composition and provides natural light into the space. The bathroom, the storage area and the meeting room are located towards the back of the store. The interior is illuminated by strips of LED lights along the ceiling and a single round bulb just above the reception desk. Neat!
