Inspired by the concepts of rarity, refinement and tranquility, TUVE is a 66-room boutique hotel designed by Hong Kong studio, Design Systems. The hotel is tucked away in Tai Hang, a neighbourhood in convenient distance from the bustle of the Hong Kong CBD, offering guests an authentic insight into local art, food and culture.

The brief required Design Systems to translate the essence of a series of atmospheric photographs of a Swedish Lake by Kim Høltermand. Taking design cues from Rick Owens and Tadao Ando, material, light and space were carefully manipulated to deliver a moody sensory experience. Oxidised metal doors, raw brass, grey flecked marble, textured concrete, gold leaf and wire glass work in harmony to create a rough yet pure aesthetic. Experimentation with lighting adds to the effect, enhancing the qualities of the materials through shadow and reflection.

Rooms were designed to ‘un-fold’, emphasising the hidden beauty of the hotel and its approach to refinement and discovery. A timber box is located in each room, and when opened, reveals a desk, chair, shelving and tea-making area. Design System’s refined approach can also be found in the bespoke raw brass fittings – hooks, handles and stands – all imbuing a sense of craftsmanship and quality.

    Entrance is much, much too dark and unwelcoming. Compare this to the light and open feeling of the rooms. The unfolding concept could have been carried another logical step by using ‘Murphy beds’, hidden in the walls. Also why are all the opening boxes up against the wall?? A multi function ‘box’ used in a small seating area in the room would be a welcome design feature. Also having unfolding eggs or other circular forms would be interesting. I would love to see some unexpected color used in bedding materials. It should contrast with the cool greys and hard edged concrete used throughout the rooms.
