Fairfield Hacienda in Melbourne by MRTN Architects.

On the fringe of Melbourne’s inner suburbs, this family home sits in an established residential street of Victorian villas and Californian bungalows. From the footpath, the Fairfield Hacienda with its angled roof fits into the landscape of single-level homes, effortlessly picking up the street’s original pattern of hipped and gabled roof forms.

The design of the house was conceived of in two parts, base and roof. The grey concrete block base hollowed out to form the courtyard and living spaces; punched openings creating the impression of windows. The roof a warm cedar folded plane floats above, not connecting to the solid base below. A clear juxtaposition of material and form is created between the two parts.

Goodman Office by MAKE Creative.

Housed in a previously unoccupied industrial mezzanine space, this satellite office was designed to highlight the transformative possibilities of industrial sites and create a showcase for adaptive reuse. Unit T2 in Homebush now houses Goodman’s Western Sydney property team. The space has been fitted with a series of timber clad forms tightly underneath the existing steel trusses, the forms evoking the lines of industrial roofscapes and frame a formal entry into the workplace. The workplace is designed to be open and collaborative- long aluminium stage trusses span the space, locating the workstations as well as supporting the overhead lighting.

Apartment Renovation in Paris by CUT Architectures.

This beautiful apartment renovation in Paris converts a space to house a growing family, making a separate area for the children. The south wing – formerly lounge and library – now has a playground, two bedrooms, bathroom and a bathroom. Access to these areas is hidden in a partition extending over the entire height of the room. A key feature of this apartment is the old partition between past owners and staff, reinterpreted here as a systematic frame creating an accessible library and kitchen – a box and shelf structure with infinite uses.

Frozen by a Thousand Blessings in South Yarra designed by Kalliopi Vakras Architects.

Frozen by a Thousand Blessings is a self-serve frozen yoghurt concept store which began in 2013. After the completion of the Doncaster store, Kalliopi Vakras Architects designed their next store on Chapel Street in South Yarra. Each one is unique in design and dependent on the existing features of the empty shell as well as the streetscape. Lime washed timber wraps across the ceiling and down the opposing walls to meet a row of lights above the seating on one side and a series of black metal shelves on the other side. The visitor’s are also greeted with playful messages printed on the floor as they move through the store.

Douglas and Bec store opening in Collingwood, Melbourne.

In early April, Douglas and Bec will open a store in Collingwood – something Bec has always wanted to do having formerly lived there. Alongside the Douglas and Bec collection, the store will house other designs by like minded practitioners and carefully selected artisans from around the world.

Douglas and Bec’s own work concentrates on material, simplicity and craftsmanship – Bec is the designer and her father Douglas is the maker, working together synonymously and with great vigour thoroughly enjoying every project they do.

Upala by Alpha60 + Melanie Katsalidis.

Upala is new range, borne from a unique collaboration between Melbourne jeweller, Melanie Katsalidis, and fashion house, Alpha60. Launching as part of the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival (VAMFF), the UPALA collection celebrates the collaborative duo’s shared love for geometry, clean lines, and harmonious forms. Central to the project is their mission to bring opals into a fresh context and gain them a “renewed appreciation.”

UPALA is a 2-tiered range – a high-end collection represented by Katsalidis’ retail gallery, Pieces of Eight, and a production range available from the Alpha60 store.

Dulux unveils interior collaborations with Australian fashion designers.

Dulux revealed the results of their 2014 ‘United by Style’ project that saw them partner with Australian fashion design teams Romance Was Born and Gorman to create four impeccably styled interiors. Drawing on the designer’s 2014 Autumn Winter collections, Dulux’s team created room designs that demonstrate inspiring and trend-setting techniques to take fashion colours straight from the runway into the home, under the direction of Dulux Stylist Bree Leech. “The latest collections from Gorman and Romance Was Born embrace colour wholeheartedly, these rooms take their cues from that amazing use of colour and demonstrate how effective paint can be in creating mood and character in a space,” said Leech.
