Created by photographer Tom Ross, architect and poet Michael Roper, and graphic designer Stuart Geddes, Among Buildings reflects on 26 examples of significant Melbourne architecture through photography and poetry. Published by Uro Publications, the book includes an introduction by architect, artist and poet Alex Selenitsch.

Among Buildings began as a collaboration between Michael and Tom in late 2013. Once a month they would meet at a site of architectural significance, taking time to walk through and around the site, discussing the building, scribbling notes and taking photos. Over the months and years, and with curatorial direction from Stuart, these reflections came together to form Among Buildings. While Michael, Tom & Stuart are responsible for three distinct aspects of the project, in reality the words, the images and the design of the book were developed in a true collaboration.

Among Buildings encourages readers to imagine afresh the buildings around us. Michael’s poetry operates between the physical and imaginative realms, drawing upon aspects of place, myth, history, personal experience, description and narrative. Tom’s photography, though anchored to the physical nature of the buildings, is nevertheless very human, suggesting private experiences in often very public places. Stuart’s design completes the collaboration, drawing the poetry and photography together in a format that encourages exploration and discovery, analogous to the experience of walking through a city with eyes wide open.

Some of the buildings included in the book include Robin Boyd’s Featherston House, Sean Godsell’s RMIT Design Hub, Wood Marsh’s Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Bates Smart and McCutcheon’s ICI House, Ashton Raggatt McDougall’s Storey Hall, Kerstin Thompson’s Napier Street Housing, O’Connor and Houle’s Heide III amongst others.
