Fitzroy-based interior architects, Studio Wonder have created a new retail space for Alice McCALL in Sydney. To date, the studio’s portfolio includes a neat selection of fashion projects—retail spaces for designer Alice McCall’s sister, Bridget McCall and her label LIFEwithBIRD, and a shadowy exhibition concept for the inimitable Toni Maticevski at Bendigo Art Gallery. The studio seems to have a talent for translating wearable whimsical concepts into real-world spaces—from Maticevski’s otherworldly orchids and butterflies, to Alice McCALL’s signature circles and scoops of gelato hues.

The Alice McCALL store in Westfield Miranda in Sydney’s south echoes the gelato parlour aesthetic of the brand. It features a lightly speckled terrazzo floor and a milky Corian counter. Walls are milky white too, offset by curved polished brass racks that run in arches and bends throughout the store. A sweeping rounded wall hides dressing rooms from the mall outside.

Plush apricot and gold mottled carpet has been custom designed by Rugs Carpet + Design. A set of round ottomans upholstered in Kvadrat Steelcut Trio and Herald collections (in pistachio and mustard-gold) are dotted throughout the space, and brushed brass wall lights by Anna Charlesworth feature in each of the change rooms. Edges, shapes, and textures cleverly tribute Alice McCALL, but each detail works to enliven the clothes a little more too.
