Hello, and welcome to Yellowtrace Spotlight June 2013 edition! This month’s design news showcases a recent Melbourne project by Techne Architects; stunning modular kitchens from WSworkshop; new lighting available at Artemide and The English Tapware Company (I know, the latter seems like a paradox); hot new seating from DesignByThem and Pierre and Charlotte; upcoming art show by Minna Gilligan at Daine Singer Gellery amongst others.

Recent Project.

Fonda Windsor, Melbourne by Techne Architects.

A run down heritage showroom in Windsor has become the home of the second restaurant under the banner of local taqueria Fonda Mexican. Demolition of the neglected space uncovered the spectacular shell of the building, and the design was built around highlighting the pre-existing features. This included the beautiful cathedral ceiling and trusses, stained glass windows and other period ornamentation.

Complementary furniture imported from Los Angeles provides a unique highlight to the dining room and ties the design to a vibrant geometric floor pattern conceived in collaboration with graphic designers Goldenhen.

DERIVA by Cristina Celestino of Attico.

DERIVA is a collection of contemporary totem, inspired in proportions and form by fishing floats. Presented out of scale in different shapes and colours, the volumes are suspended in a membrane of borosilicate glass. The composition, amplified through the transparent membrane, changes the visual perception of the object; creating an optical illusion. The iconic object, viewed from a different perspective, conveys a message of suspense and waiting. Saturated colour enhances the borosilicate glass in its various surface treatments, alternating through sandblasted translucency, to transparent and opaque glass.

For added functionality, the vase can be used as a small aquarium for the home.

70/70 Table by TAF Architects for Muuto.

THE 70/70 TABLE by TAF Architects expresses a unique balance between Nordic minimalism and careful detailing, which creates a beautiful and airy profile. The shape, format and angles vary around the two cast aluminum frames, which gives the table an interesting unique character. The 70/70 table has multiple functions, from dining table to workstation or home office and comes in two different sizes and four different colors – black, white, grey and light green.

“The 70/70 table is a study in geometric forms identifying the dimensions for a well-balanced table. The table is based upon two cast aluminium squared frames with the dimensions 70 x 70 centimetres. The simple Scandinavian aesthetics balanced with the warmth from the layered wood adds personality to the table.” -TAF Architects.

art ‘Feel Flows’ at  Daine Singer Gallery.

Minna Gilligan’s most recent body of work cites the Beach Boys song Feel Flows, from their 1971 album Surf’s UpFeel Flows was recorded with a reverse echo, and unlike their other recordings, has a sinister, haunting reverie that lingers long after the last reverb of the line: “White hot glistening shadowy flows”.

Gilligan’s large scale paintings, on found bed-sheets and fabric, resonate and resound with similar echos. The work is full with lust, longing, and painterly psychedelia. They are the artist’s imagined extracts of time, particularly the yellowed, sun-drenched ’60s and ’70s, spliced together to create new composites.

Minna Gilligan works primarily with painting, drawing and collage. Her practice speaks of fleeting, personal encounters with the past and present, and manifests in a tumultuous reconciliation of both. Her works are playgrounds of colour, often inhabited by lone protagonists trapped in states of longing, sadness or exhalation.

Opening: 3-5pm Saturday 8 June
Exhibition: 5 June – 6 July 2013
Venue: Daine Singer, Basement 325 Flinders Lane, Melbourne

Thisispaper Launches Online Shop.

The crew behind Thisispaper Magzine is proud to bring to you its latest project, Thisispaper Shop. After running a magazine for almost two years, they felt the need to expand and step from the digital into the analog world.

“We launched Thisispaper Shop to make a statement. We disagree with mass production and consumptionism, with the relentless quest for new products that satisfy artificially created needs. We’d much rather go back to basics, own just a few items, made and handled with care.”
