Design Free Thursday | Vintage Weight Gain Ads!

“Good news for thousands of girls who have no sex appeal!”
“If you want to be popular, you can’t afford to be SKINNY!”
Holy $hit batman, has the world we live in changed or what? Not only are these politically incorrect slogans the thing of the past (unless you are watching an episode of Mad Men), I certainly don’t EVER recall seeing an add for weight gain. Not since the day I was born.
I always knew I should have lived back in the 50s and 60s – I would have been “very popular” with my figure. Anyway, what do you think? Are these ads right – do men really prefer “non-skinny” girls, or is that also a thing of the past just like these hilarious slogans?

I am channelling the 50′s and am going to shout to the world ‘I am woman, love my fat’!!
Now I must dash and have a big breaky to get in shape for summer (-:
I only think the ads/artwork would have been a little brighter had the girls ACTUALLY had a little flesh on their sides… not overweight but just … round…’er… like the way most of us look :-)
Ha ha ha ha ha I love it. I use vintage magazines for my collage work so I get such a kick out of these ads. One of my favorites is “are you a skinny nervous girl?” Thanks for the cool post, as always. I love your blog :)
Oh if only everyone looked like these gorgeous women! I much prefer the Nigella Lawson types to the Kate Moss’s of the world!!!
Interesting how the curvier ‘after’ pictures look about the same as the skinnier ‘after’ pictures of women in weight loss ads that are around today.
I want to live in this world.
x
Hahah!! I wonder if this would recur any time in the future. ;P
“now there’s no need to be skinny and friendless” Classic!
Was there a single word of truth in any of these ads. How did they get away with it?!?!
